#Brexit Article 50

There has been so much written about a Brexit plan or a lack of one. Some have called for a parliamentary vote on the implementation of Article 50 - others for a further referendum to agree the Brexit terms as when they are agreed.

Can I suggest you listen to Peter Lilley on The Daily Politics (6th September).

Peter is a true heavyweight politician of the same ilk as Nigel Lawson and Norman Lamont. All have held senior cabinet office - all have vast experience in international finance, business and trade and negotiating with  the EU.

In a nutshell this was what Peter Lilley said :-
  • Brexit means we take back full control of our money, our laws and our borders.
  • We will not be part of the single market if free movement of people is conditional as free movement of people has been ruled out by the UK referendum vote.
  • A points based immigration system has not been ruled out but will not be enough in itself to be able to control numbers and will need to be supplemented by some other system - like work permits.
  • If the EU will not offer us a free trade deal we will operate under WTO rules as the US and China and many other countries do with Europe. This is in the EU's gift and it will hurt the EU if they do not offer us a deal. They have to listen to the will of the British people and not insist on something our government cannot deliver because of the Brexit vote.
  • A clear and quick way forward would be to enshrine ALL EU current laws under which we currently operate and make them ALL UK laws - at the point of leaving. We can the change those laws as we desire under our democratic parliamentary system. This seems logical and orderly. It is also part of the answer to what Brexit will look like. It will look like what we make it look like by changing our laws as our electorate determines. (after all the whole point of leaving is to govern ourselves).
  • The Referendum gave a clear constitutional decision to leave the EU. What laws we change, who we let in etc is then up to us to decide through our parliamentary system. These are not referendum matters.
  • Article 50 should be invoked asap - and a lot has already been decided. Leaving should not be delayed or sidelined by those trying to circumvent the democratic will of the country expressed in the referendum or by trying to engineer remaining in the EU through the back door.
