DURBAN
We are in Durban having come down to the coast (Indian
Ocean) from The Drakensberg's. It is a short stay – just a quick look really. We
are staying at the Happy Hippo Backpackers. A good vibe here and lovely staff.
It is very spacious – like a warehouse.
Well what about Durban? Well it is SA’s third largest city
and the continents largest port in. It was white SA’s beach playground prior to
the ending of apartheid – a hedonist place. After apartheid its character
apparently changed and there was an influx of black people mixing with the
large Indian community already there. (Indians were brought in by the British
to work on sugar plantations). It built a reputation for being an unsafe place.
More recently Durban has benefited from an upgrade, particularly
the beach area (another benefit of the SA World Cup). It was to the beach area
we headed on this overcast muggy afternoon. It is a Sunday – a family day and
families are out.
The seafront is not a sophisticated place but one the less
an enjoyable place to be. There were plenty of people in the sea, promenading
and enjoying family picnics.Bunnie Chow |
