#Nuclear weapons and NATO

It would be a better world if there was no need for nuclear weapons.

We all want a world free from conflict.

We would all prefer to be pacifists if we could be.

We would all prefer to believe in the goodness of human kind.

We would all like to believe in Gandhi's peaceful protest methods as the only necessary solution.

BUT TYPICALLY

Human kind is very often not good.

Humans are very often selfish and are certainly territorial.

Humans often lust after revenge.

Humans are typically greedy and easily led.

Humans are often cruel and violent towards each other.

Despots flourish.

Megalomania is often revealed as a human trait.

Power corrupts.

Tribalism and nationalism flourishes.

Religious dogma just will not go away.

The world is becoming over populated.

Their are vast inequalities.

A despots problems at home are often cynically sidelined by picking a fight with a neighbouring country or against minorities.

Humans are animals with animal characteristics however much we might strive to disguise them.

SO IN THE REAL WORLD YOU HAVE TO BE PREPARED TO DEFEND YOURSELF. WEAKNESS WILL BE SEEN AND EXPLOITED.

Russia under Putin for a multitude of reasons want to take back what they had when they were the USSR - and who knows what more.

NATO has been mothballed. The West has become war weary.

Russia and Putin see weakness.They have grown more confident.

NATO needs to wake up.

The ultimate deterrent is our nuclear weapons.

We need Trident in this uncertain world.

Who knows what is around the corner.

Just as an aside - The Scots want to be nuclear free but they want to be in NATO and therefore benefit from the protection of somebody else's nuclear weapons!
